11/9 to 11/13 Letter M, Hands.
M for Mosaic, monkeys, mouse. My Body: Hands and Touch
Learn about how the kids explored with their hands. What they learned about mice and how they made their own mosaics.
During the week of November 9-13, as is every week, we were jam packed with things to learn and explore.
For the letter M, we learned about mice. We sampled different types of cheese that they like to eat and talked about where they live and what they are attracted to. Also how to get rid of them without violence.
Ava, Ram, Gandiva, Jayadeva and Padma eating Cheese. Jayadeva is being extra cheeeeessyyy about it! :)
We studied a version of Aesops Fable: The Lion and the Mouse. Book By Ananda Vrindavan, Bhakta Musika and the Lion. And we discussed how we have to be kind and loving to each and every one of God’s creatures.
“Hickory Dickory Dock! The mouse ran up the clock!!”
We learned the Hickory Dickory Clock nursery rhyme and discussed time to the hour with the older kids and numbers for the younger kids.
We talked about famous Mosaics made of little pieces around the world and the kids made their own Mosaic Rainbows! How proud they were of their accomplishments.
Since Bhagavad Gita Jayanti is coming up, we usually do a Body Theme. We started by teaching the song “Maharaj Ambarish was a very great king” and discussing why we have our senses and how to use our senses in Krishna’s service.
For Hands and Touch, the kids had so many answers! Hands are used for cooking and cleaning and playing with playdough and combing our hair.
The kids made Touchy Feely Books as they glued different textures onto pages of a book. Bumpy sequins, Silky Cloth, Scratchy Sandpaper, Fluffy Cotton.
They also rolled out their own plaster of Paris and made Handprints! What a messy task that was but for a keepsake forever. :)
Again, as with every week, these themes are taught side by side with their usual Sing Spell Read and Write Curriculum and Saxon Math for the older kids. And SSRW with numbers and literacy activities for the younger kids. Unfortunately the only time we remember to pull out the camera is when there is an arts and craft activity. The kindergarteners will write the words that are being used in the theme. The theme serves to bring together the academics as well as Social Studies and Science in a fun and interesting way.
